I have always enjoyed doing things in the community, helping to raise awareness and funds for good causes. I remember not long after leaving Sylvan High School, a toddler called Ben Needham went missing. It really upset me and I could only guess what the mother was going through. So I took it upon myself to try and raise funds at my local post office on Portland Road SE25 to help find the missing boy. I don’t remember how much I raised ( it was some time ago now) but it felt good to help or try and help in a small way.
My father was from Dominica, so being half Dominican, when hurricane Maria struck the Commonwealth of Dominica in September 2017 it affected my family and many others, I felt helpless and wanted to do something. Homes and businesses were devastated and the island is still working hard to rebuild their lives, but was can all help in some small way!
Maria made landfall on the tiny island of 72,000 on the evening of 18 September, with maximum sustained winds of nearly 160 miles per hour.
Permanent Secretary - Minister of Housing, Lands & water Resource Management- Mr Lucian Blackmore announced on October 20th that wind measuring devices on island recorded sustained wind speeds of 220 mph.
The Government has estimated 90% of housing stock has suffered damage, either from partial roof collapse to complete destruction. 100% of crops and Dominica's much admired green rainforest has been completely destroyed.
Luckily, Elizabeth James Gallery as platform it affords me the ability to put on special events to help raise much needed funds. On 28th April 2018 the gallery will be hosting a special SE25 Jewellery Makers Showcase.
